Sigulda is a town in the Vidzeme region in Latvia, 53 km from the capital city Riga, situated on a picturesque stretch of the primeval Gauja river valley. Because of the reddish Devonian sandstone which forms steep rocks and caves on both banks of the river, Sigulda has been called the "Switzerland of Vidzeme". Gauja National Park was founded in 1973, and it was the first national park in the territory of Latvia at that time. The attraction of Sigulda is that there is a wide and multifarious group of tour sites in comparatively small territory. Beautiful views of the River Gauja primeval valley alternates with cultural history monuments. We suggest walking or riding a bike to enjoy the plenty of Sigulda and its surroundings.
